These captive, composting worms are gifted to the preschoolers as they journey toward thinking&nbsp;differently about food waste.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-bottom is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"199\" height=\"219\" src=\"https:\/\/livingwithplastics.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/04\/002-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2876\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Inviting these little composters to build&nbsp;worlds together becomes a special event. We read&nbsp;together and begin to compile a list of possibilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">In this process children and educators&nbsp;gather worm knowledge, and we build upon and add to this existing knowledge as we create collective worlds with children and worms. Daily and weekly\u00a0rituals emerge. Each day we negotiate which food scraps belong to each bin, and at the end of the week, we share the scraps with the\u00a0worms in the vermicomposter, give the seeds to the seed group and take a walk to the outdoor\u00a0composter for all the rest of the scraps. Story of\u00a0the Very Hungry Worms<\/strong><\/em><br>  <em><br>There once was a group of very\u00a0hungry worms.<\/em><br><em>One day when the worms were\u00a0very hungry, they climbed all the\u00a0way up to the top of the worm bin\u00a0because they wanted to eat food\u00a0scraps.<\/em><br><em>They cannot buy food scraps at the\u00a0grocery store.<\/em><br><em>No!<\/em><br><em>The food scraps come from Chef\u00a0Miriam and Charlotte and\u00a0sometimes us after snack time, and\u00a0we keep all the scraps in the fridge.<\/em><br><em>Well, picture this!<\/em><br><em>At night when all the children had\u00a0gone home and the lights had all\u00a0been turned off, the<\/em><br><em>worms wiggled to the top\u00a0of\u00a0the bin, pushed the lid open, and\u00a0slithered down the other\u00a0side.<\/em><br><em>They slithered over to the fridge,\u00a0climbed all the way up to the\u00a0handle of\u00a0the fridge and opened it\u00a0with their\u00a0squirmy, little bodies.\u00a0<\/em><br><em>Once the fridge was opened the\u00a0worms\u00a0grabbed the food scraps\u00a0with their small, secret worm\u00a0mouths and slid back down\u00a0to the\u00a0floor.\u00a0<\/em><br><em>When all the worms got back to\u00a0the floor\u00a0in a large slithery group,\u00a0they carried the\u00a0food scraps to the\u00a0bin on their\u00a0backs.\u00a0<\/em><br><em>They crawled\u00a0all the way\u00a0back up\u00a0the outside of\u00a0the\u00a0bin and dropped\u00a0the\u00a0food\u00a0scraps down into\u00a0the bottom of\u00a0the\u00a0bin&#8230;\u00a0<\/em><br><em>But&#8230;\u00a0<\/em><br><em>Some of the worms\u00a0decided\u00a0to go\u00a0on\u00a0another\u00a0adventure.\u00a0<\/em><br><em>21 worms crawled
